Here is one other consideration I use with my small business clients. I have them create 3 vision statements — a 1 year, exit and “an important date in between” visions.

Why? Because as the person who creates a business based on our passion, we put our hearts and souls into our business. Why not look at it as an investment from the start? We don’t have to sell it in 3 years for it to be an investment. After all, we are investing so much of time, talents and cash into it. Why not leave it in tip-tip shape as one of our legacies?

I mean even if you plan to drop dead at your desk, (which many smaller business owners do plan to do) you don’t want your business to be an extra burden to your family when you die! When you look at the exit, when your decisions take into account an exit — then what you leave your family or employees is a company that can live on and have a long-standing impact in the world. I think that’s pretty KEWL!
