More than half a million devices have already been compromised — with more likely to be targeted over the next few weeks.

The US Justice Department has issued a warning that hackers have gotten into routers.  Here is their May 23 report,  The FBI is also involved as information can be stolen.

WHAT TO DO

What I’m recommending is more than what’s being asked of us. But our internet systems, in our offices or homes, are very important and we should do all we can to protect ourselves.

1) Pull the plug of your router.  In fact, why not ALSO take this time to reset your modems by pulling the plug on it and disconnecting from cable.

2) Wait a minute or so, then plug it in again.  That will reset and update your equipment.

3) Change the password for your router.  If you’re not sure how to do this, go to the website of the company whose equipment you’re using for instructions or find the manual that came with your router.

4) While you’re on the company website, see what other warnings or software upgrades they recommend.  NETGEAR for instance has had 3 software upgrades in the past 2 years.  Follow those instructions.  If you did not register your product when you purchased it, do so now.  This way if there are problems in the future, they can notify you.

BEST PRACTICES FOR YOUR COMPUTER

1) Many of us keep our internet modem, routers, computers, laptops, etc. on for days, weeks, and months.  It’s just a good practice to turn off your computer equipment daily.  Yes, even your smartphone.  And turn off your modem and router every now and then (you can create a calendar notification to remind you to do so).

2) Most, not all, internet service providers (companies you’re paying to get the internet)   It would not fix the current problem, but it’s just good to keep updated.
