Maria’s Visiting NYC Resources
Visit NYC
Summary: I’m a NYer and as such, I’m always asked for resources for the city I grew up in and worked in.
But this page was started after 9-11 when people were afraid to visit NYC and I started teaching classes to help people make their visit the best ever.
Take the time now to visit the most exciting city in the world. Hey – it’s exciting even if you’re standing still!! And don’t forget to have a Knisch, biali, bagel, Manhattan Special (soda), buy U-Bet Chocolate Syrup, and fresh macaroni (pasta), too!
If you want additional help, set up an hour meeting with me, where I charge $100 to help you plan your trip so that you can see the most ever; even on short trips. Knowing how the streets, trains and buses work and run has been so important to visitors who want to see the most they can, most often on short trips.
9-11
Since 9-11 you cannot go to the viewing area of the NY Stock Exchange. If there is any day of the week that restaurants, museums, etc. maybe closed, it is usually Monday or Sunday. Most banks close at 3pm (not 5pm).
Portraits of Grief – The Hero’s of the WTC Massacre To NY Times Articles
9-11 Museum. Visit the Family Memorial any time. It’s free and is outside. The museum itself may take a few hours to get into; even in the winter. I recommend spending 2 days there as there is much to see and it’s very emotional. There is a make-shift restaurant in the museum. I found it to be more expensive than other NYC restaurants in the area. Museum website.

Other Than Hotels
- There are youth hostels, hostels, the YMCA and check local colleges. Use your favorite search engine to find them.
- You can rent an apartment, like those available through Metro Homes/ or Trip Advisor
- This hotel offers deep discounts during the summer. I have never been in it, but you might want to check it out. www.flatotel.com
- You also have couchsurfing, airbnb, and other places to stay, too.
Business Resources
Be aware. You may need a state, city and county license to start your business. And you may need to get licenses from any city you do business in (or speak in). NYS, like most states, will get you for yearly fees whenever they can.
In addition to licenses, you may need a license to do something specific — like a massage license, therapy license, etc. And finally, if you sell anything or buy something from another state where you didn’t pay tax, check to see if you are required to pay sales tax (things you sell) or use tax (things you buy from other states) on it.
A few websites to get you started are below. Also check the library for books specifically on starting a business in NYC or NYS.

- Flushing Meadows – Corona Park Area Great place to spend a day. Take the #7 train, bring a blanket, food, and camera, too. Rent a boat or bike. Only public bathrooms for the park are near the train station and leave something to be desired. Sad that the 1964 buildings aren’t taken care of better or that the area streets need a cleaning. My recent trip there, was a delight, nonetheless.
- Flushing Meadow Park. Site of the 1939 and 1964 World’s Fair. For those of you who attended the 1964 World’s Fair, a trip to this park may bring back many memories. Now a park containing the globe of the Earth and featured in Men in Black. Great place for a picnic, bike ride, walk.
