Someone has stolen my article..

Hip hip for Google Alert.

It told me that one of my articles appeared on someone’s website. Now I know that although it’s wrong to do, people don’t ask for permission to use articles anymore. However, 97% of the times, when I find an article being used, it’s being used to teach small business owners “how to do business better” and includes my copyrights, bio, and clickable link to my website. I move on…

Sometimes it includes everything except the clickable link and then I ask the website owner to fix it or remove it. Usually they fix it. Or if for some reason they can’t, they remove it.

Sometimes the article contains no copyrights, no nothing or it’s on a spam type website and I ask that it be removed. Often these spam websites take articles with high keyword content and take it as their own. It’s difficult to contact the owner of the website, just like the situation I encountered today.

Today I experienced something that I’m finding more and more often. My article was posted on a website “inside out” – (the sentences, well, they’re not sentences) I looked to find the contact person to have it removed, but there was no contact information anywhere.

I checked who owned it and the domain ownership is hidden (surprise, surprise). But I was able to see who the site is hosted with and it’s hosted with the company I use! Piece of cake I thought. I mean I have a viable website with contact information, the offender website doesn’t.

I found my article on the web dated 2008. Sent the information to Hostgator along with my request for help and a link to the stolen article.

You got it, I get all this legal mumbo with information about paying lawyers, sending documentation in the mail, and such, Jes!

I mean someone stole my article.

Used to be that you’d tell someone, show them the proof and they’d contact the offender. That’s all I’m asking. I mean if someone looked at the articles on both links, they could see that one is from 2008 and is proofread with correct copyrights, and the other is a complete mess on a website with no contact information.

Me, I just want the offending article removed.

It sucks when your work is stolen.
