Today's tip is a no-cost-to-you opportunity, for advisors and business owners, to be "published", possibly by a top publication by providing your advice or opinion, in a few sentences or a paragraph to a journalist. That's how I was published in Entrepreneur Magazine, Huffington Post, and a few other major publications. And I've been interviewed by a variety of marketing and business podcasters, too.  You can see some of the publications we've been featured or quoted in on our homepage at HARO was started in around 2007 by Peter Shankman as a Facebook Group. That's where I originally found it. It grew exponentially and Peter moved it to it's own website and database list. He sold the database 3

72. Teach & Implement It Online A live event is costly and time consuming for the owner and the attendee. In 2005, I held my first 1-day strategic planning day for a group online. Gone was the cost of the venue, renting technology, food, refreshments, airplane, etc. The cost was the use of a webinar system. I can charge attendees less, too! I taught part 1 and answered questions. Attendees got offline and did the work. I was available by phone/email during breaks. We got back online, provided feedback, and then started part 2. Most advisors start out with the same basic dilemma,  They have neither a business plan nor a marketing plan. Instead, they’re winging it! Needless to say, this isn’t the most efficient or effective way to run a financial firm. It’s also a good way to consistently work 50+ hour weeks, suffer from the constant nag of stress, and end up with a dreadful case of burnout! Do you know the difference between a business plan and a marketing plan? A business plan is not a marketing plan. Having a marketing plan without a business plan leads to churning through a lot of money fast. So what’s the difference and which one do you need? I’m glad

Strategic Planning Roadblocks Explained

Most advisors don’t use a business and marketing plan to drive or guide the growth of their business.  Then one day they decide it's time. They come to me kicking and screaming about writing a plan, not wanting to do it, but somehow innately knowing that a plan is overdue. Why don’t advisors, who help their clients plan, create a plan?  The explanations go something like: “I don't need funding, so I don’t need a 50-page business plan.” “My plan is going to change anyway, so why should I waste my time creating it?” “It will take too much time.” “I started to and found it overwhelming.” “I didn't start a business to do the types

Here's a tip I never thought I'd have to write.  It's just common sense.  If it's not common sense, then it's about treating others like you'd like to be treated. When you cancel a meeting with someone, give them plenty of notice, and contact them personally. Most often, meetings happen with no problems.  If you realize that you'll be late, text and/or phone the person.   Otherwise, they expect to see you. If an emergency crops up -- like you or your immediate family is in the hospital or something worse -- of course, cancel. That's a real emergency.  Make a short phone call and text the person if you reach their voice mail. All other reasons
