The world I grew up in, Wall Street, compensated me for my 16 hour days with a salary plus incentives. At the end of the firms fiscal year, I was called into the office and asked what I thought I should get for the year's profit.   My boss had other ideas and I would find out what those ideas were at bonus time.  My overall salary for the year was based on my performance for the year plus a few other things -- all based on results.
